I enjoy both the freedom and the challenges these materials bring to the bench .... but sheesh, they can be hard work! Deconstructing things in order to reuse them can be pretty tough on my hands. Sometimes the only answer is to break out the angle-grinder, which I <i>loathe, </i>so I usually have to enlist the help of the ManBeast. <div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiniU6L95-0O7-VIT5yOk1_KrA5QCHPaup1BwDvKHidpvVdxW6EvVJj1Ud3XIGEOJUGxYon0_GQG4GPY0s4cGEHT8CVAWV_9UbrSNaTfBnKfZIuXx5zYOBkCBV9EVHDjVAW0s-TPFPZrlY/s640/blogger-image--2135448443.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiniU6L95-0O7-VIT5yOk1_KrA5QCHPaup1BwDvKHidpvVdxW6EvVJj1Ud3XIGEOJUGxYon0_GQG4GPY0s4cGEHT8CVAWV_9UbrSNaTfBnKfZIuXx5zYOBkCBV9EVHDjVAW0s-TPFPZrlY/s640/blogger-image--2135448443.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Aluminium is the easiest by far - but look how grubby that stuff is! And I am grateful for it. I get to study in a creative space specifically designed for learning about and creating art. I live in a beautiful part of the countryside, my kids are independent and I can afford decent tequila. Doesn't get much better than that huh? Well, actually, it does! Every now an then an opportunity pops up that makes life seem absolutely golden ... let me explain ...<div>A few years ago, when I had first started at art school, I started to watch programmes on TV about art - probably because I felt that with a bit of education under my belt I might have a hope of relating to them! I caught a great doco about an Australian artist, David Frazer. I was amazed by his image making, his process, his subject matter and his approach. Really, I was dead impressed! Among other things (painting, drawing etc) David makes meticulous, highly detailed wood engravings and in the doco he travelled back to his small country hometown to make some images around ANZAC Day. The characters and scenery of his town were so familiar to me - as they would be to anyone who grew up in rural Australia. Have a squizz at some of his work ...</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic29XqZN74r7lWewwtur80e1No-ru_fi52_L7NsgG1tDBYf8m3cdz5uI3ng91kS9xD7aJ01TQ258gSBmTwXygwqeiyiVKbCeXJ1mxdMnHomZITFbSjMJCJXo546kCikXMijLhBzSVG-HI/s640/blogger-image-2145978877.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic29XqZN74r7lWewwtur80e1No-ru_fi52_L7NsgG1tDBYf8m3cdz5uI3ng91kS9xD7aJ01TQ258gSBmTwXygwqeiyiVKbCeXJ1mxdMnHomZITFbSjMJCJXo546kCikXMijLhBzSVG-HI/s640/blogger-image-2145978877.jpg"></a></div><b><i> Lest We Forget</i></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvsfyLHMilLXt6sF_ytycQVZGFu3BXOIS5gTPh-ZFqelB_E0dGuX64EVGvLfst7rjacAHfxScSJWw9_ldUjzi6dRPQ4bB4VL7aCGtD1Od0i8FZxcTApjGy_7JFq6rQMuqjZHQrsJmhDfQ/s640/blogger-image--172131954.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvsfyLHMilLXt6sF_ytycQVZGFu3BXOIS5gTPh-ZFqelB_E0dGuX64EVGvLfst7rjacAHfxScSJWw9_ldUjzi6dRPQ4bB4VL7aCGtD1Od0i8FZxcTApjGy_7JFq6rQMuqjZHQrsJmhDfQ/s640/blogger-image--172131954.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><b><i> Downward Mobility 2</i></b></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Hjr1EshcOocjR-2C-pGbQmoo2evc95rNSgNokyzQpn8iqeJEEnYzG4mRnxUgF2Mw66I9E7Hn6AnvLjRT7DHUnBCweSllRSGL0pr6cZhyVcanSTzgLu9LROJq5_44Sr4bF382WBG8hRo/s640/blogger-image--2038600743.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_Hjr1EshcOocjR-2C-pGbQmoo2evc95rNSgNokyzQpn8iqeJEEnYzG4mRnxUgF2Mw66I9E7Hn6AnvLjRT7DHUnBCweSllRSGL0pr6cZhyVcanSTzgLu9LROJq5_44Sr4bF382WBG8hRo/s640/blogger-image--2038600743.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><i><b> Another Night On Earth by David Frazer</b></i></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Now bear in mind that wood engravings are made using the end grain of special wood, lemonwood, box etc ... this means that the images are necessarily small for example, "Lest We Forget" is only 15x12cms! That's crazy small right?! Last year I got to see an exhibition of David's work in Adelaide and I was so excited to see them for real rather than on a screen or in a book! There is no colour in these images yet they are some of the most vibrant pictures I have come across. Yeah well, by now it must be obvious that I am a fan!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">So what does that have to do with me counting my blessings and feeling pretty damn lucky? Well. On Friday I got to join in a workshop with the man himself! WTF I hear you exclaim!? Yup it's true. Accompanied by his lovely partner Sarah, Mr Frazer spent the day at AC Arts showing us how to make a wood engraving. IT. WAS. AWESOME. Given the "quality" of my print I clearly won't be giving up the jewellery making any time soon but it all adds to the tapestry right? . I wanted to base my image around the 1938 cover of French Vogue featuring Frida Kahlo, I messed around in photoshop, transferred the image to Lino and away I went. I like the carving of the linothe best ... Anyway the image has worked out ok although I need to tweak it a bit - a few more lines here and there and a tidy up of some stray lines .... <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQA-6ybj8UdUfDDcb2enfaWby-a52kyNiQmlCz-oH3wq4ndwyaEHQBnp0D4JYKC6_5wXt1KMOEjo_RRDEmTgt54T0m6NuDgqgGsPNHnSUslyjq_etLI9JmJqpGpi7pKsUuThXM1fX6luA/s640/blogger-image-1415920333.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQA-6ybj8UdUfDDcb2enfaWby-a52kyNiQmlCz-oH3wq4ndwyaEHQBnp0D4JYKC6_5wXt1KMOEjo_RRDEmTgt54T0m6NuDgqgGsPNHnSUslyjq_etLI9JmJqpGpi7pKsUuThXM1fX6luA/s640/blogger-image-1415920333.jpg"></a></div><br></div>suehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10169259206171089014noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37525016972867481.post-19924348139661052202014-02-11T16:19:00.001+10:302014-02-17T13:10:01.580+10:30What goes "whirrrrr, bang, woof, whirrrrr, bang, woof" ? Can't guess? Well, let me explain ... That is the noise that a team of builders make when they are cutting away brick walls and nailing everything in sight with a nail gun ... Oh and it makes the dog go crazy so he chimes in with a deeply offended "woof" and growl! No wonder I want to run away from home! It is not exactly conducive to getting work done - all that fuss and noise is messin' with my Chi ... Still, deadlines are deadlines regardless of the distractions at hand ( I should add that these builders are all young and fit looking ... Yet another distraction!) so I had to get in some studio time this week. I am joining in with a whole bunch of jewellers (real ones!) to put on an exhibition for the upcoming Fringe festival in Adelaide. The concept is to make jewellery that represents a part of Adelaide or it can even be made from bits of the city and surrounding areas. Following my usual instinct for working with recycled and reclaimed materials, I have concentrated on using wine bottles since I live in an iconic wine region. It's a bit of a process. Firstly the bottle has to be EMPTY! Never one to shirk my duty to my art I have addressed that part of the process quite happily! Next there is cutting and shaping and drilling and tumbling the glass bits to make them ready to work with. Finally I assemble the earrings using reclaimed pewter and brass components that I make and then hang them from handcrafted hooks of recycled sterling silver. I am happy with the outcome but <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">am going to be in some exceptional company for this show which is a bit nerve racking . Still, I can't wait to see my work alongside that of some "proper" jewellers! </span><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdbc5C_XKTm_5u7_eHzGqOO1D1WxReaBVd9QiHgvQ321eCBf5_1XYLipDeR9ZTtvY2nKccq80HeMcNmhLp1HNfR13sfIlNJBbHmjo7aDR1TyWsRZ-COj7mxdUNyqqs4JTJ81NmPojn5lc/s640/blogger-image-1317733998.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjdbc5C_XKTm_5u7_eHzGqOO1D1WxReaBVd9QiHgvQ321eCBf5_1XYLipDeR9ZTtvY2nKccq80HeMcNmhLp1HNfR13sfIlNJBbHmjo7aDR1TyWsRZ-COj7mxdUNyqqs4JTJ81NmPojn5lc/s640/blogger-image-1317733998.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMLD8pC4WGw6lV7-soUhjzXPAoSJE50FQOcqKFygpTgXhLzkGD3cuF6V2EQ0AKuSrwpjJsbQnI5ZuND3DFwr1fQ58CflxWQobKa8C4jUJQOAffcmYMlLV7gApAZUbwq7g-lzXXkW5oH8U/s640/blogger-image--383814270.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMLD8pC4WGw6lV7-soUhjzXPAoSJE50FQOcqKFygpTgXhLzkGD3cuF6V2EQ0AKuSrwpjJsbQnI5ZuND3DFwr1fQ58CflxWQobKa8C4jUJQOAffcmYMlLV7gApAZUbwq7g-lzXXkW5oH8U/s640/blogger-image--383814270.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvIfbh01fyzqpk_U1ArMfYOw8E-UZjGmMszrlMP8GOT1qlvK-TntzkZ-HiNeItj3GgME1SlxNGVb9Th3aTqIuBfcdBIPuaCnFtWtjc1heAVqgzFu4QQkog6AjX1NdAYb5_y0tWcOvDZp8/s640/blogger-image-1119243660.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvIfbh01fyzqpk_U1ArMfYOw8E-UZjGmMszrlMP8GOT1qlvK-TntzkZ-HiNeItj3GgME1SlxNGVb9Th3aTqIuBfcdBIPuaCnFtWtjc1heAVqgzFu4QQkog6AjX1NdAYb5_y0tWcOvDZp8/s640/blogger-image-1119243660.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></span></div>suehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10169259206171089014noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37525016972867481.post-60457555305520240802014-01-13T00:00:00.001+10:302014-01-14T09:14:34.412+10:30Fibre and jewellery - good combo!I seem to be shying away from the hard work of making metal jewellery and my attention has been taken up by bright colours and fibres! I think it began when I saw a woman wearing AMAZING yellow sandals - oh how I coveted them! I am not really given to buying expensive shoes so I had to quench my desire for yellow in other ways! First up I revamped a candlestick that I picked up ages ago at a thrift store. It has a nice rusty base and other metal bits so I thought a spruce up of the wooden part was in order. Here is a before pic ...<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQU28gHZ6yWTcBzShAfoSjYBOnxb0UPqXNBtWM6y17lCLfVp9NEkUTkerA_6KQ2ETxkNS2XgiPwGtXUx4g3wywuRRFruIAlfwoZnVnv4NrVTg8f2sqUOIONNRiyuisTb4l3L87vtiLZ2I/s640/blogger-image--1319785435.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQU28gHZ6yWTcBzShAfoSjYBOnxb0UPqXNBtWM6y17lCLfVp9NEkUTkerA_6KQ2ETxkNS2XgiPwGtXUx4g3wywuRRFruIAlfwoZnVnv4NrVTg8f2sqUOIONNRiyuisTb4l3L87vtiLZ2I/s640/blogger-image--1319785435.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">and the beauty shot ...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWNJOpDzfXqTCJbW0hxVT2ds2ddI5rccz2DDZ2tmjrEGv8sPgf_hf4B7URNoDIntoJyWRV2_tPhGDpEPBIHVBOqpz0pWmpUvKmgHQvGZiRWQy2mOGl5ErKzYo8hTd7LSyJz92Z5FLOx7Y/s640/blogger-image--153927069.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWNJOpDzfXqTCJbW0hxVT2ds2ddI5rccz2DDZ2tmjrEGv8sPgf_hf4B7URNoDIntoJyWRV2_tPhGDpEPBIHVBOqpz0pWmpUvKmgHQvGZiRWQy2mOGl5ErKzYo8hTd7LSyJz92Z5FLOx7Y/s640/blogger-image--153927069.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Then while I was out thrifting with my daughter I bought two bunches of yellow flowers - they had been marked right down because it was the end of the day! Or maybe I am just lazy ...? Anyway, there is a show coming up in February that I am very happy to have been accepted into so I thought I should get started on some work. The theme of the exhibition is "Wear a Piece of Adelaide" and it runs throughout the Fringe Festival (South Australia <i>is</i> the Festival state after all!). The premise is that you can create jewellery that is literally made of a piece of the city or something representative of the city/surrounds. I am planning some pieces made from wine bottle glass, specifically wine bottles from South Australia, most probably from the Barossa Valley because that is where I live!<div>Working with glass can be pretty exciting and as always when you work with recycled materials, you have to be prepared for outcomes you might not have envisaged. </div><div><br></div><div>This is part one of a multi-part process ...</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglk5eHGj0mrmWy6terF3B8DtR4hyphenhyphene8396I5yvBwFDTc7hvfj9jMg0CXjRv_rpZ6dXvCTNTiKgJk3W2G7cRMageI61W9BdlnSnEVCISCq5iMaIx9-edbaEmnlS8VCe7xfUq3IK0FIET7go/s640/blogger-image--1442909242.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglk5eHGj0mrmWy6terF3B8DtR4hyphenhyphene8396I5yvBwFDTc7hvfj9jMg0CXjRv_rpZ6dXvCTNTiKgJk3W2G7cRMageI61W9BdlnSnEVCISCq5iMaIx9-edbaEmnlS8VCe7xfUq3IK0FIET7go/s640/blogger-image--1442909242.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">These pieces will most likely become earrings. Eventually. Lots of bright colours, braid and pom-poms seem to be fashionable just now. I am too much of a tight-arse to spend <i>real</i> money on such a thing but when I spied a nicely shaped basket - with a zip closure (!) - in the op shop I figured I would have a go at creating one ...<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuDCrx6cCpxH4EBXhsQZsTOgLAzSQiI1VZiDx4sMn86Lrx4Amw1qekm1qsPTlfjNz8UKSSyHKszuH5iAxYpIf9l3k2CKqW98fp6MIcGakYtLjgvFxw9orZv5a_DoR8IOlPWGoCO4_bR5c/s640/blogger-image--1512494594.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuDCrx6cCpxH4EBXhsQZsTOgLAzSQiI1VZiDx4sMn86Lrx4Amw1qekm1qsPTlfjNz8UKSSyHKszuH5iAxYpIf9l3k2CKqW98fp6MIcGakYtLjgvFxw9orZv5a_DoR8IOlPWGoCO4_bR5c/s640/blogger-image--1512494594.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It is a nice shape and as I said it has the big advantage of a functioning zip closure and an internal pocket ... but the bow? It seemed the only sensible thing to do was be inside and stay as still as possible. With Christmas fast approaching I would normally find this is a bit easier said than done but I must getting better at finding my Zen place cos I actually enjoyed doing a whole lot of not moving! Of course I wasn't really idle ... <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SuTJZ4_4pt1xXF47Xidev6UOtaQBjlABgin8KIgCi93A1KXokgpOA4cv3Cm1_1z_bKOtRfLj_2MC7amDAct5hvhQmoohM075NbYGKhGNEogQuSlVLRHi4Pf-yommKlQXkUV-u7Z0vGM/s640/blogger-image-396603187.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SuTJZ4_4pt1xXF47Xidev6UOtaQBjlABgin8KIgCi93A1KXokgpOA4cv3Cm1_1z_bKOtRfLj_2MC7amDAct5hvhQmoohM075NbYGKhGNEogQuSlVLRHi4Pf-yommKlQXkUV-u7Z0vGM/s640/blogger-image-396603187.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The other day I was having one of those pre-Christmas tidying frenzies and was putting away lots of stuff that seemed to have been lurking on every available flat surface for a goodly while. As I went to put some of those old school self- covering buttons in their rightful home, a whole bunch of their cousins leapt out of the cupboard to greet me .... That is to say that the container housing them toppled off the overfilled shelf and the contents went all over the floor. As I was tsk-tsking at myself and the wilful nature of cupboards that can't properly contain their contents, I had the merry thought that putting those buttons to use would be heaps more fun than just stuffing them back in the cupboard. A bit more scrounging was required to find the scraps of Japanese silks and other yummy bits but I emerged triumphant! I settled comfortably at my kitchen table and happily stitched and covered for ages. All thoughts of Christmas tidiness were readily submerged beneath the snipping rhythm of sewing scissors and the satisfying 'snap' of button backs being slotted into place. Now, what to do with them?</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA1nQ-56MFCgmvQlYyoJeZbrL5IOF0gfwTFTHxLHdxTLpCwoGdDgeAWBDShxmx0eXYFjEVf1CxGxgz8aAdYkZjjjdGWqQb7HYxeWAnBuhn0Tw_UTH1Vyk0cgCwzcN0MSinWpoOw9mX-_w/s640/blogger-image-451720383.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA1nQ-56MFCgmvQlYyoJeZbrL5IOF0gfwTFTHxLHdxTLpCwoGdDgeAWBDShxmx0eXYFjEVf1CxGxgz8aAdYkZjjjdGWqQb7HYxeWAnBuhn0Tw_UTH1Vyk0cgCwzcN0MSinWpoOw9mX-_w/s640/blogger-image-451720383.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Ah yes - buttons as jewellery! So you see folks there is quite a lot to be said for pre-Christmas tidying up ... particularly if you ignore it and spend your time crafting instead! </div><br></div>suehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10169259206171089014noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37525016972867481.post-55660557878466530482013-12-07T07:34:00.001+10:302013-12-07T07:53:50.721+10:30Been a little "cray cray" around here ..So, I got back from swanning about in Oaxaca and kinda hit the ground running. My house renovations (studio on its way!!) had gotten underway and there was a whole lotta chaos. The builders seem to have this <i>fluid </i>timeline so I still have a temporary wall dividing half the house and the contents of that half stuffed into every available space! I pretty much jumped off the plane and took myself off to the dentist and started root canal treatment - oh joy and a week later had a minor knee op. The op at least was a scheduled thing so I knew it was coming and I must say I am dead impressed with modern surgical techniques. They fixed up a heap of stuff in my knee and all I had to show for it was a couple of little holes! Remarkable! Hence, I haven't blogged at all because let's face it, my minor health issues are really not that interesting - I am just using them as an excuse to explain my absence in BlogLand! What has actually kept me happily busy have been preparations for an Arts Bazaar that the art school I study at holds annually. So much fun! As soon as I could get off the couch I was in my little workroom beavering away like a madwoman ...<div><br></div><div>Here is my stall - with just a touch of Mexico! It all started at The Metropolitan Museum of Art...<div><br></div><div><br><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvaxEnNPs-5p8ItAbAWEn7YTRyuFjwkSFuHj2MLhpR25C-XmRmo1GLLMq_v4rmtjU7vCaddOr6bAndLkcO3V8wjoH7EasZNex9Wb37mz1W1kwVmUP6hwl5RK-wzVLK3QEmUGP-E39f9BM/s640/blogger-image-707815767.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvaxEnNPs-5p8ItAbAWEn7YTRyuFjwkSFuHj2MLhpR25C-XmRmo1GLLMq_v4rmtjU7vCaddOr6bAndLkcO3V8wjoH7EasZNex9Wb37mz1W1kwVmUP6hwl5RK-wzVLK3QEmUGP-E39f9BM/s640/blogger-image-707815767.jpg"></a></div><br></div></div><div>This place is just one giant treasure box - so many amazing objects. I was in Heaven! I spent oodles of time in the Medieval area and so on. I have to admit I kinda flew through most of the painting galleries ... Well the Miro was awesome and I guess Monet has a certain appeal ... But for me it really was all about the objects from all over time and place. I was shattered by the end of the day so I strolled down to Central Park and indulged in one of these ...</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjExO9W4Yowu0e08tDKPYoYUpvGzA_JzxuYa50ZkfQOEQB03P142TSRNT4JsY33kNeB5ZXVrs7IkFLs2DfF608KXtpqMfp6UMWP4du5i9wuR_rvv-wybK3SwmZ6ypzOIteXGsVZ7L_DTzM/s640/blogger-image--427643973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjExO9W4Yowu0e08tDKPYoYUpvGzA_JzxuYa50ZkfQOEQB03P142TSRNT4JsY33kNeB5ZXVrs7IkFLs2DfF608KXtpqMfp6UMWP4du5i9wuR_rvv-wybK3SwmZ6ypzOIteXGsVZ7L_DTzM/s640/blogger-image--427643973.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">...this could in fact be love! I think there are massive amounts of germs circulating on long haul flights and next time I might try a full-body condom or some such to keep them at bay!<div>I have walked and walked and walked some more to try and familiarise myself with at least some of the city. I survived the madness that is Times Square ...</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNrEtRPXguuJ30R3tWqbZFM4D3ZRSkt9zlQPRcEzwe5nzX2bWC9ix-r14ey6SitRTFA5Q872eQb-ckVMiDPGNjLp_XWm7xH-4dHoOxiK7OlS5v7AVm9qQInNRKTPRpzmLlYb_TL4l-euQ/s640/blogger-image--1763116553.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNrEtRPXguuJ30R3tWqbZFM4D3ZRSkt9zlQPRcEzwe5nzX2bWC9ix-r14ey6SitRTFA5Q872eQb-ckVMiDPGNjLp_XWm7xH-4dHoOxiK7OlS5v7AVm9qQInNRKTPRpzmLlYb_TL4l-euQ/s640/blogger-image--1763116553.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">(No need to ever do that again ...!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I was lucky enough to catch a show that I missed when it came to Australia ...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3RvMyWpokrUzhXHhyphenhyphenBvkbD0m_w2iZC7syv2U29ktsw_sKpTg8A9FILzu1ld8cY_XOOBf_2IeWXDDmfzPNm5BMu3owWmW3zWvZinkugIbUTKc-rGPEJUieRNxuaVcU7x5T6YZ-yTbFOwE/s640/blogger-image--1139827337.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3RvMyWpokrUzhXHhyphenhyphenBvkbD0m_w2iZC7syv2U29ktsw_sKpTg8A9FILzu1ld8cY_XOOBf_2IeWXDDmfzPNm5BMu3owWmW3zWvZinkugIbUTKc-rGPEJUieRNxuaVcU7x5T6YZ-yTbFOwE/s640/blogger-image--1139827337.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">... and yes, it really is as marvellous as everyone says! Turns out I am rather good at it ... It has also become apparent that the less you do - well, the less do. I think it is becoming a habit! I am starting to believe that old adage "if you want something done, ask a busy person to do it"<div>I did manage to rouse myself from my sloth-like stupor to start messing about with some assemblage ideas. Of course there is always a lot of "research" involved when you start a new project. I started with every Michael deMeng YouTube clip. This in turn led to some crazy cat videos ...well lets just say that once you start down the YouTube path it s a slippery slope people!</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQnASlzujbzuuQ-zmw3x3PwEbMh-pD6xzWEXIq4wmFtXWW7nIxB0HmndrMmQdgy93K7FFdsMSzltiffgO9dG9qbo5Hm569D2C4KN56Gpvqd5w1l62rC2C4chXZ2lzvK_OB-AB89-U88R4/s640/blogger-image-45181414.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQnASlzujbzuuQ-zmw3x3PwEbMh-pD6xzWEXIq4wmFtXWW7nIxB0HmndrMmQdgy93K7FFdsMSzltiffgO9dG9qbo5Hm569D2C4KN56Gpvqd5w1l62rC2C4chXZ2lzvK_OB-AB89-U88R4/s640/blogger-image-45181414.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">This is the very first stage of a shrine assemblage called "if all my thoughts were beautiful". I love all those sad eyed saints depicted on Russian triptychs. And what is not to love about the beautiful nichos and reliquaries associated with Mexico? Not to mention flowery decorative shrines and the like. I am often drawn to simple symbols like hearts and hands - they have such universal appeal and most cultures relate to them. I also have a propensity for chopping up dollies for their eyes ....It is no surprise then that of late I have been borrowing heavily from all these cultural influences to create my jewellery. I also think that my mind is wandering to Mexico 'cos I have a trip planned there!<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQvrWAaFboFu8Cnn7LuCmLE9guFV4iHqkOPPPEZlBNfOg5Q7xfwFl_p-JbJK3OkctQVywFntAuxRJRVjkf-KtTrF-ldiMuI5q4Da_6LweM3So46jPwkOAkpz6h4O4hbC7Vm3jixpAUdUw/s640/blogger-image--2140278340.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQvrWAaFboFu8Cnn7LuCmLE9guFV4iHqkOPPPEZlBNfOg5Q7xfwFl_p-JbJK3OkctQVywFntAuxRJRVjkf-KtTrF-ldiMuI5q4Da_6LweM3So46jPwkOAkpz6h4O4hbC7Vm3jixpAUdUw/s640/blogger-image--2140278340.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The heart with the hand inside it and the heart with the eye are both brooches. I am working on getting better at bezel making. The eye has its own little bezel too. I have used resin to fill both of the brooch bezels. The hand one has tin as a background and in the eye one I used paper. I cut the bezel strips from copper and brass trays but used copper sheet for the backs. There are some vintage rhinestones and earring bits involved too! The heart with the cross is a pendant. I approached this one a little differently - mostly because as it turns out I am a bit impatient about waiting for resin to cure! I still made the bezel from recycled material with a copper back. I added brass stampings top and bottom. The main difference is that instead of resin, I made a heart shaped die and used my homemade hydraulic press to form up some tin to sit inside the bezel. Hence it has that nice domed look. I riveted the cross and heart to the tin before I set it into the bezel. There was a fair amount of fiddling etc because I am not yet very skilled at the whole bezel thing ...Still I am pleased with how they look - and I will keep on persevering with the bezels!</div><br></div>suehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10169259206171089014noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37525016972867481.post-37506121838378077582013-08-27T20:27:00.001+09:302013-08-27T20:27:01.584+09:30Pop up shop ...<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdh41jBtTM-LsEO0_qVa_LOG-ZHrzex_7RYE9zhLaxxbK39O4kWOSklDpTi5u7hHKqsfP6DvEl3iZ6TzNp3PC7eD8CZ_-hWL2JVRews8AD4S0iWd1lysQptNK9sZyEaDiUZ2y_jwIUDCo/s640/blogger-image--1234518328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdh41jBtTM-LsEO0_qVa_LOG-ZHrzex_7RYE9zhLaxxbK39O4kWOSklDpTi5u7hHKqsfP6DvEl3iZ6TzNp3PC7eD8CZ_-hWL2JVRews8AD4S0iWd1lysQptNK9sZyEaDiUZ2y_jwIUDCo/s640/blogger-image--1234518328.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">four days to go ...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: '.HelveticaNeueUI'; font-size: 15px; line-height: 19px; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">https://www.etsy.com/shop/SueGarrard</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: '.HelveticaNeueUI'; font-size: 15px; line-height: 19px; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: '.HelveticaNeueUI'; font-size: 15px; line-height: 19px; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: '.HelveticaNeueUI'; font-size: 15px; line-height: 19px; white-space: nowrap; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "><br></span></div>suehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10169259206171089014noreply@blogger.com0
