DIY

Most of the time, living in a country town is a blessing - fresh air, community spirit, open spaces etc, but when you get it into your head that you want to make something but don't have the necessary bits and there isn't a shop that might sell said bits within cooeee - well then it is a little bit less than awesome. You see, I wanted to make some components like this ...

I thought I had some glass tiles floating about but a pretty thorough search of the studio didn't reveal them so I was feeling a little frustrated. Sure, I could have chosen to make something else but I REALLY WANTED TO MAKE THESE! sigh. You know how it is ... Well, with Necessity being the Mother of Invention and Sue being a stubborn mule it is little wonder that I decided to make my own glass tiles. I fished a broken photo frame out of the shed, hunted up the glass cutting tool and set to. My glass cutting skills are not that great - actually they are pretty awful but I persevered.

It took a lot of boo-boos to get a halfway decent little square. The problem with this piece is that the edges and corners are rather sharp and have a tendency to poke through the foil when it is burnished down. In the past I would have ignored the issue and probably just hoped for the best but thanks to Kieth lo Bue and his marvie teachings I have a new-found confidence regarding tools. I am also keen to step up the quality of my workmanship. Also   courtesy of Mr lo Bue who sets the bar rather high with his own work. You can see it here and will understand why I would like to emulate that standard! That is all by way of explaining these ...

My self-made glass tiles. Clearly they are not perfect but the corners are rounded and the edges are beveled - that's right people -
b-e-v-e-l-e-d. Oh yeah - there is a little pride goin' on here! Then I got all cocky and started making purposeful patterns in the glass ...

I'll let you know how this frosty tile works out. So it would seem that, living in a country town with limited access to STUFF is actually a good thing afterall - well good for making me get off my arse anyway!

You did good! I know that frustration of needing something and not being able to just pop down the road to get it - but you did great.
